A lot of effort and knowledge is shared with my visitors that actually care. I do not wish to be rude but if you are visiting just to spam my site, then kindly refrain from doing so. In fact don’t visit any site just for the sake of spamming or promoting your own site or blog.

Go and find your own users and visitors that actually care about your services or products, do not leech off mine.

It makes me sick to see so many garbage comments placed on my blog. If you learned something here then great, say so.

This is probably the most asked question from a newbie who wishes to have a web presence, besides how to make money.

With every passing day there are newer, better, faster and cheaper ways to create websites; not only that the process of actually creating a website is now so much easier then just two years ago. HTML knowledge is no longer a mandatory requirement to build or make a site, of course having some basic fundamental HTML knowledge would help a great deal, but that too is easy to learn.

Best Methods To Creating Websites:

Site Builder With Host: This I recommend is the most quickest and cheapest one to use. Your knowledge of HTML can be zero. If you know how to use your mouse and keyboard, can maneuver around the screen with ease, understand upload, download then you are in business. In the last few years this service has become so much more stable and reliable. In the earlier days, formatting of the screen, positioning images etc had issues, was not always reliable and did not display well in all browsers, but many of those issues have now cleared up. Using this option you could literally have a decent site up in just a few hours. Very simply you sign up with a reliable host that provides this Site Building Service. When I first started and wished to get a website for a friends business (who also had no clue), I used this method to create a website within a day for him. It was easy, fun, quick and most of all it was cheap. This also enabled him to be able to do his own changes and updates to the site whenever he wished to; no dependency on any high priced, “busy” webmaster. I used the following Hosting And Site Building Company. The hosting and site building was built into one price so it was perfect for me. They have so many options, I suggest you take a look if you really wish to get a website started quickly. The features are incredible and it is just like using a word processing software; pick and place different blocks, images etc. Use ready made templates, images, layouts and the list goes on. So for those who really need a website, do not want to pay a webmaster, wish to control their own site etc check this out. Your drawback of using a Site Builder; you cannot take the site with you. If you change host you have to recreate your site again at the new host.

Use WordPress Templates: I used these method for my blog. This is a fantastic method of creating your website or blog. They have thousands of free templates; choose one that suits or fits your business model, plug in your information and images and off you go to the races. I think this is a great option since you have free support forums, hundreds of templates to choose from, so many add-on plug-ins that you can build a great looking site with incredible features. All this is Plug and Play. I honestly suggest you take a look and try this method. All you need is a good host site like FoxtrotDomains, install WordPress using the host; choose a template and away you go. Once you have picked a template, you can add pages to it, modify it any which way you want, get plug-ins and features; all this for FREE. Of course you will have to pay for hosting. You can do all this and modify your site at any time, as many times as you wish with just a few clicks of your mouse. The plug-ins available are so many and varied; almost any feature you wish to add to your site is available for free or in some cases almost free.

Use Commercial Templates: There are thousands of ready made commercial templates available on the market to choose from. You can buy one of these, plug in your information and upload your site and off you go. The drawback using this method is that you require a software such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop or Frontpage to be able to make the necessary changes to the template. You also need to understand and use FTP to upload the website from your computer to the hosting site. You need a little bit of HTML knowledge and you have to ensure that the images you place are your own or have been paid for. This is great for those that want a bit more sophistication to their site and more control in the sense that they can take their site with them in case they change hosting companies. This method also allows you to choose from literally thousands of designs, with new ones coming out everyday.

Website Building Software: Another option that is extremely easy to use, has a gradual and small learning curve and is very reasonably priced. These software’s are very similar to using a sophisticated word processor. They have numerous built in features that help you create fantastic looking websites. There are hundreds of ready made templates to choose from, or you can build your own, handles images, videos, other media with ease. Great sophistication and smarts allow you to easily add pages, design new layouts, create online shops, have flash images, send e-mails to clients and so much more. One of these software is EZGenerator. I have used it and continue to. You can create a site within hours, uploading to your host site is a built in feature. So design site, a couple of mouse clicks and viola your site is ready to be viewed by your customers.

Use A WebMaster: Don’t want to put together your own site? Too busy to learn? You prefer to delegate the work to someone who knows his stuff? Then find a good webmaster and let him/her build a complete website for you to your specs. Ensure you get a complete copy with all the images and files etc for your records (in case they disappear or are never around when you need them). A great option if you have the right talent; they can create what you envision, take care of your SEO and do all the technical work you don’t care to know about.

Create Or Build Your Own Website: If you have the time, money, inclination and desire you can learn to create your own website from scratch. There are so many resources now on the internet that you can find all you need to get started; free courses, tutorials, guides, forums and blogs to help you along the way. You don’t need to purchase expensive software’s, there are many cheaper copycat versions of the more well known commercial products that will do almost the same thing and in some cases they even have better features. If you take this route it is commendable and great but it will take time, so have patience.

There you have some common methods to create your first website. Which method would I choose? If I have no idea at all about creating a site then I would use Site Builders at my Host. If I have a bit of knowledge or enjoy learning then I would use WordPress as my choice. In summary I suggest the latter as my final recommendation.

Whilst we are preparing, designing, planning our website we also need to consider where it will be hosted. Selecting a website host is just as important as planning your website, in fact I would consider it as part of your website planning.

So what’s so important about a host that we need to be careful about? I mean you see thousands of companies offering incredible deals on hosting some even providing FREE hosting. Again I say this, stay away from free hosting. A good hosting company should be like a friend who invites you to his home and once there makes you feel welcome and comfortable, not like one who invites you and pays no attention to you, in fact his only purpose was to ensure his party was “FULL” of people.

A poor hosting company with frequent downtime, outdated technology, poor support, poor security, slim or infrequent data backup etc can turn a good website into a poor acting one. Whats important to you, is your site visitor’s and your client base. You need to keep them happy by not only having good content but to ensure that your site doesn’t take minutes to load, is frequently down, your database is compromised due to poor security measures or constantly having to upgrade your plan because the one you are on has limited of everything.

You must analyze, realize and understand exactly what sort of site you have and it’s requirements. Is it an Information Site? An e-Commerce site? A Social Site? Do you store a lot of data? Is it a Blog or a Forum? Answering this and other questions will not only determine the kind of hosting company you will need but also the appropriate plan that fits your site. There is absolutely no need to get the biggest plan (irregardless of what the sexy lady on the chat line suggests) when you have a 5 page website that consists of information for a very limited number of users. Yes, we all would like to have thousands of hits everyday, but in this instance our site is not catered to meet that requirement. For instance we may have a site that is designed for a local community soccer team, number of users that would access this site on a daily basis on average maybe 20 (let’s be generous, because don’t forget most of us forget about soccer in the winter). So do you really need a plan that gives huge bandwidth, massive storage space or unlimited email addresses etc etc? And the bill is $19.99 per month. You don’t need that plan, you need something around $4/month and that is it (of course we are assuming that the company is reputable to begin with).

Is price the driving force in determining the host you choose? No. Since there are literally thousands of host providers, most of the smaller or newer ones tend to try and grab you on price alone. All newcomers shop around till they find the cheapest price and then go with them. Remember anyone can make their website look good and attractive to try and get your money, they use all those great big words out there, Unlimited this and Unlimited that and Free this and Free that all for $1.99/month etc etc.

On the other hand please understand that paying more is not the answer either, I know of cases where a site owner despite paying a ton of money for a dedicated server for a commercial site he was running had his site crash numerous times to a point where he lost all his data because there was no adequate backup. He not only lost a majority of his clients and money, but he was down for days and the poor guy was scrabbling to get his site up and running on another to salvage what he could. It takes months and years to build a reputable site, you cannot leave it to a poor host company to screw it up for you. The only thing the host company compensated him was a months hosting. Crap I say. Of course what he should have done despite there assurance that daily backups were made, was to make his own backup.

So what is the solution? Well, check around, shop and get educated. Write down what you need from a host, yep write it down on a piece of paper. Once you know what your requirements are then move forward. If you have no clue then talk to your website developer and let him give you a few references. Speak with other website owners, visit a few forums and ask questions. By the way please do not fall for those sites that list the top 10 hosting companies and give you a nice site with the listing. Most of those are setup as affiliate sites; which means no matter which hosting company you click and choose from that list, will give the site owner a referral fee or commission (affiliate money) from the hosting company.

For most small sites that are mainly information sites a basic plan will suffice, as your site gets complex you may move up the ladder. Remember one very important point; You Can Always Upgrade Your Plan. Start at the basic plan and see how it goes or should I say grows. If there are features you later require then upgrade when you need it. As the commercial states; “Save Your Money!” For e-commerce sites that require a little more take a higher plan, for social networking sites go with a more sophisticated setup or even a Virtual Dedicated Server, at this stage your techie people will know what to do.

Two pieces of advise before I let you go; try to see if you can get your hosting on month to month basis. What I mean is, do not pay a yearly plan. If the plan allows you, pay a month at a time or 2 months at a time. Reasoning is that if you are not happy with the service you can shift to another host. Some companies give you a huge break if you sign up for a yearly plan and are so confident in their product and service that they will refund you back for non used months in case you decide to cancel mid way. So check those angles as well.

Secondly, Negotiate. It’s a tough world out there, companies are looking to retain their client base and to grow. They also have many hidden specials that you may not be aware of; ask for a discount, you will be surprised at what you can get. I have tried it many times and saved 25% or more. Hey, like I say; Better in Your Pocket Then Theirs.

What makes a good hosting company? Besides great service, support and price, you should look at the different features each of the plan provides and compare it to your website requirements not only currently but in the future. Ensure that your website can grow with them. Remember it is a pain to switch hosts, so select carefully and wisely.

We all go through the painful period of searching and racking our “information overloaded” brains with the perfect Domain Name to Register. It happens, and will continue to do so as long as we keep registering domain names. Every-time we think we have found just the right domain name and there is no way someone else will have thought of it; our bubble bursts as someone has not only thought of that name but even the closest of variations to that domain.

So we go back to the drawing board, scratching our head, looking up dictionaries, searching the net, handwriting on little bits of scrap paper; at work, at home, perhaps whilst we are driving and I am sure in many cases in the middle of the night as we awake and come up with the ideal name, or so we thought. Hey if you get up in the middle of the night and have come up with a new idea or name or whatever it is you are working on, don’t be lazy, get up and write it down. Believe me, there have been million dollar ideas that have vanished from the brain vault the next morning due to laziness or sleepiness.

Anyway back to the domain name chase. We have to accept the fact that the most sought after domain extension is the .COM, and since this has been around the longest, most popular and the most common; names under this extension is the hardest to find. There are professionals and businesses that register domain names as a source of income. They sell these names on a daily basis, so they have registered all the common name already, especially for the .com extension. The other extensions and even the country TLD’s are being snapped up at a rapid pace.

Check NOW at Domains And Hosting if your Domain Name is available.

So what are your alternatives? You have a choice of being smart with names or using a combination of names that fit your purpose. So here are some rules to follow when deciding on domain names;

Based on your business, product or service; write down all the various names and name combination’s you can come up that you like and fit your website. For instance if you were to start a website about old cars; then of course one of the ideal domain is oldcars.com (which of course is not be available), so then you may want to write down different derivatives of your subject such as; old automobiles, classical cars, old cars, history of cars, etc. You get the idea. Using old and cars as part of your domain also helps with SEO of your site.

If your business or product is already well known or you wish to brand your name, then you can use a unique domain name. Branding takes time if it is new, since there is no real word association to the product, service or business you are promoting. Let’s say I come up with mytiyak.com as a domain for my business that sells shoes. So mytiak is the brand I am selling and trying to promote, it will certainly take time and effort for visitor to associate shoes with mytiak. The advantage here is that once established it could do wonders for my product, but it will take time. The big corporations can afford to do this as they also have the money to promote and brand a new product.

Which DOT do we select? You must start with the most common and widely used; the .COM. All of us use this domain extension and will almost always search for .COM first when looking up a site. Once you have registered .COM. I suggest you at least select the .NET, .ORG and your country TLD (Top Level Domain). So if you were to leave in the UK, I would recommend you select .CO.UK as well. If you wish to register other TLD’s such as .ORG, .BIZ etc. by all means go ahead, but at least those four are essential to register if you are serious about your business. I think the .COM is critical to obtain.

If your business caters only to a local community and you serve only your city or town or country then you may choose to register only your ccTLD (Country Code) - If the .COM is unavailable and you are adamant about the choice of Domain Name. A country code domain extension also assures the searcher that you are a local company. As a matter of fact search engines such as Google have a built in algorithm (and settings) where they will refer or show you results of your search to businesses that are close to your location (unless you change your search settings) first. When you think about it that actually makes sense doesn’t it. In searching for a Pizza Place why would it display a place from Sydney, Australia.

You also have the option of hyphenating your domain name such as; i-like-old-cars.com. But imagine having to try and say that to someone over the phone or even trying to remember it. Search engines have no problem in separating the words so there is no issue with the SEO of your site, in fact it may even be helpful.

Many companies also register the plurals or misspellings of their domains. For instance words like “believe” can also be spelled as “beleive”, or say “oldcars.com” should also register “oldcar.com”. So a lot depends on your domain name and the various other obvious derivatives that you may want to register or not. Some of this gets a bit expensive and paranoia can set in very easily.

This is so obvious; come up with short domain names. Yep, a lot easier said then done, since all the short ones are taken.

Come up with names that are very easy to remember and say over the phone or in person.

Choose domain names that are easy to spell, pronounce and write.

After the .COM you must register at least your country code TLD. I think this is so important that I am mentioning it again with the importance on the country. If you are going to register a domain the minimum is the .COM AND the Country Code. So in Canada it would be .CA

Check availability of domain at www.foxtrotdomains.com. It will also show you various other derivations of your domain name in case the one you chose is already registered. So in the above example if the domain ‘mytiak.com’ was already registered then it would display other names like ‘mytiakstore.com’, ‘mytiakshop.com’ etc

Is it important to have your product, service or website content as part of your domain name? It helps for sure but it is not the determining factor for the ranking of your site.

I suggest take your time, search the net for sites that are similar to yours, see where they rank in a search, observe their domain names and figure out what works for you. Remember you may have the greatest domain name registered but if your site lacks in content it will all be for naught and the reverse is also true.

Title: This is a brief one-liner that describes the content within the web page. It shows up on the top left hand corner of your browser. You must include this on your website and you must not go overboard with the description. Be accurate, descriptive yet brief. Use keywords here that reflect the keywords you will use within the content of that page. Every web Page has it’s own title Meta Tag. The Title description is what shows up in the SERP (Search Engine Result Page). So make this creative, effective and attractive, but don’t just stuff it with keywords.

Meta Tags: Every HTML document has Meta Tags at the top; between the <HEAD> and </HEAD>. See the image sample of the Meta Tags and what their content looks like;

Meta Tag – Keywords: These a re series of keywords which further describe and reflect the content of your web page. Now there is a lot of discussion whether Search Engines actually take into consideration keywords from here to rank a site or page. Some gurus say this has no bearing, some disagree. Here is my take on it; years ago Search Engines did give a lot of weight to these keywords, as a matter of fact they were critical to the success of your site. These days they may not have the weight they once did, but I recommend you should still use them and place them as if they were very important. Why? because search engine algorithms get constantly tweaked so you never know. Secondly the spider algorithms differ, so what Google may not consider important could have more weight with Yahoo for instance. In any event they do not harm the SEO of your site or page.

Meta Tag – Description: This should a brief description on the content of your site or web page and should also include a few of the keywords in it. Here again it seems the search engines like Google do not give it as much consideration for Ranking purposes, but you should fully utilize this Meta Tag as it does come into play during a keyword or keyphrase search matching it with the description and keywords within your Meta Tag. Although you may put a big description here only about 175 characters are displayed in the SERP.

There are other Meta Tags too, such as Author etc, but these are for information or description purposes only and have no bearing whatsoever on the SEO of your website or web page. Observe how the title gives a brief description on what the particular web page is all about. Every web page has these Meta Tags at the top, so each and every page has it’s particular Title, Keywords and Description and other Tags you need.

So there is the start to Search Engine Optimizing your website or a web page. If you wish to view any Websites or Web Pages Meta Tags all you do is; right click on the page and select “View Page Source” or “Page Source”. This will display the code for that page or document. Look at the top and you will find all the Meta Tags and their content. This is one great way to find keywords that other sites are using (a little sneaky).

As a business owners we have to constantly promote our products and services to increase client base. A website is no different. Of course we all would like to spend as little as possible in promotion costs or better yet let’s see if we can do it for FREE.

In today’s blog I will list just 5 Free Ways to Promote Your Website. Of course there are many more, but lets start with these and periodically I will list others. In fact I may even put them all together in a PDF format to be downloaded for free by all of my blog readers.

Submit Your Website: This is the first step to get you indexed with search engines and on your way to moving up in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page). Initially when I first started learning about the web and websites, I was under the impression that I should visit 1000′s of Directories and search engines to get my site popular, which will mean a better ranking. Since then I have learned that is not the case. Submit to the most important Directories and Search Engines and the rest of them will pick up your information. Here is a link to get you started by submitting your site to approx 130 search engines/directories. Here are the most important Search Engines to submit your site . The one major directory which you should submit to is www.dmoz.org. Getting submitted to this directory takes a while (do not spam them) as each and every site submitted here gets checked out by an actual human. They are very selective. Let me put it another way, get into DMOZ and you have done well. On the other hand not getting in is not the end of the world either.

Build Links: Take your time and build associations with other sites and exchange links with them. Do it with sites that have content relevant to yours. Stay away from sites that have no relevancy to your site. Build links over a period of time, do not go out like the rest of the herd and get a thousand links in 1 month (it can get you banned from Search Engines). Build links to all your webpages not just your home page. LinkandBuild is a great site that promotes the above philosophy.

Use Coupon Sites: Most coupon sites allow you to submit a coupon promoting a product or service. You register and add your website info, create a valuable coupon for their visitors and you should start to see people visiting your site and hopefully using your services or purchasing products from you. This is a great way to promote an online store.

Article Writing: This is a great way to promote your specialization skills and your website. It will most certainly bring users to your site. In many cases a well written article will be copied and used by other sites with the credit and a link to your site. Of course you must hone your writing skills, have a good title, choose correct keywords and submit your articles to a few good sites like ezinearticles. Make sure that you have a link within your article that points back to a webpage on your site. Also include your link in the signature section.

Visit Forums and/or Blogs: Make it point to visit one or two forums and/or blogs and leave valuable comments; of course once again do not forget to leave behind a link in your signature. Do not just haphazardly visit any forum and make comments, then leave and never to be seen again. Search engines do not take favourably to users that randomly leave their signature behind in all sorts of forums and blogs all over the web because it becomes obvious that you are doing it to build links. So join a couple or so blogs/forums that you like and visit them periodically and leave genuine and meaningful comments, not ones just for the sake of..

So here you have only a snippet of many ways to promote your site for free. Trust me success will not come overnight, if it does then good for you but please come back and show me how, ok. Let’s build our sites, blogs, forums, online store a small step at a time. Do a little bit everyday and you will see the growth in your site. I am starting to see it happening with me. Slowly but surely.

Every Website regardless of how many pages or how basic its needs, requires some thought and pre-planning. Let’s look at the most fundamental requirements for any website;

Domain Name: Choose a domain name that either reflects your product, service, business or brand name. Of course shorter, easy to remember domains are the best. .COM is still the most popular but others such .NET, .ORG and Country Code Top Level Domains (ie; .CA, .IN, .COM.AU, CO.UK etc) are gaining popularity very quickly due to the fact that the shorter more attractive domain names under .COM get gobbled up quickly and are hard to find.

Hosting: Ensure that your Hosting Company gets you the best value for your investment. Most expensive does not equal to the best and the cheapest does not reflect best value. (More On Hosting on another Blog)

Colours: Choose colours that are pleasant and are web proof. Some colours do not work well on the internet. Stay away from dark backgrounds with dark fonts.

Fonts: Websites only display a handful of fonts in a web safe format, that is easy to read. Stay away from script or fancy fonts. Verdana, Arial, Tahoma, Times Roman are some of the web safe fonts.

Navigation: A very critical component that many users tend to ignore. Your site must have consistent positioning for your menu selections between all your Webpages. Placing menu selections in different locations between your pages is a killer for any website. So if it is the left side that you have chosen, then make sure it is in that location for all your webpages.

Content: I consider this the HEART of any Website. Have your content ready; proofed, authentic, original, spell checked, appropriate to your topic, pleasant to read, thought out, inject humor if you can, concise yet detailed, stay within your subject, provide links to other sites or blogs that may benefit the reader further, be genuine in the information you provide and beyond all be honest.

Required Pages: No matter the number of pages your site consists of, there are a couple of essential pages every site needs to have. One is the Contact Page. A site without a contact page always makes me worry, I tend to shy away from these sites. I strongly suggest that every e-commerce site should not only have a contact page but also a telephone number. A site selling products that only has a contact form or an email address makes me very nervous to buy from. Of course every site must have a Home Page. A Privacy Page is also a must, especially for online stores, since they collect more then just e-mail addresses. As a matter fact in some countries it is required by law to have one.

The above is just a nutshell. You will note that my blog is stepping you through the process of creating and building your website in a systematic fashion. From time to time there will be detail information on each of the topics as the need and time permit. In the next few weeks I will cover more on the SEO nature of a website.

Certain parameters within our website are pleasing to spiders, robots and crawlers, by the way these terminologies are referring to search engines like Google, Yahoo etc. There are no physical spiders as such “crawling” around the net.

One of the first files a spider visiting your website looks for is robot.txt (I will cover how to create and control this file at a future date). In it’s most basic form this is a file that has instructions on how a spider or crawler is to behave with your website, in essence it has parameters that indicates to the search engine some of the following; When viewing the site is the bot allowed to do so in it’s entirety (all files) or partially or not at all, how frequently is the spider allowed to visit, the interval between visits etc. Many users are not aware that it is we who control when, where and how often our site can be visited by the search engine robots (except for the first time), not the other way around. If this file is missing on our site, then the robots visit and access our webpages and folders at their discretion. With this file we can place parameters within it to control the bot and how it reads and scans our website files. Not having this file has a neutral effect on your website.

A site map is another of those files that the spider looks for. It uses this file to crawl and index other webpages within your website. A site map is basically a list of all your webpages. There are two forms of site maps; XML and HTML. The XML version is the one that search engines read and decipher, the HTML format is for your site visitors and users. This file is extremely important and needs to be constantly updated to the most current of your website. This is very similar to the index page you find at the back of a book. Some even refer to a site map as site index. I highly recommend you generate a site map for each of your website both the XML version and an HTML one. The XML is for the search engine bots and HTML for your site users. This is also a great SEO tool for your site. Also make sure that every time you make changes to your site (ie add, delete webpages) you generate a new site map which overwrites and replaces the old one.

During the crawl of your website by a Bot, what impresses the search engines is dynamic fresh new original content. A site that has new content added on a regular basis is visited more often (unless of course you control it via the robot.txt file). A site with stagnant material does not get the same attention. A site with old, copied, duplicated material does not get a second glance, as a matter of fact in some cases repeated (copied) content or mirror websites (sites that have identical look and framework) are frowned upon by Google and can cost you demerit points. Most of these mirror sites are generated by affiliate associated websites. So if you wish a healthy ranking then continue to have original, fresh and frequently updated content. I am well aware of a situation where one website owners’ AdWords campaign got stopped by Google because he had an affiliate site that was a mirror site. There is nothing wrong or illegal with having mirror sites, but they are extremely hard to show up high on a SERP.

Webpages that has content which matches up with their keywords, meta tags, title and description are received well by search crawlers. Rich content with good SEO techniques will get you good ranking. It takes time and some effort, so be patient and keep working at it.

A site that pretends to show differently to Spiders and it’s visitors can get you banned. Many a user tries to use black hat SEO techniques to fool the Spiders and get ranked higher by pretending to be one kind of website, but are something entirely different. Don’t do it, do not try to fool the Search Engines it’s not worth it. The Algorithms are constantly tweaked and fine tuned to pick up on impostors and fraudulent websites. Be Warned. It could get your site into a heap of trouble.
