What Are Meta Tags

Metra Tag ContentUsing my theory of Treating Each Web Page As A Website I will look at different parts of a web page that we can plan to Search Engine Optimize.

  • Title: This is a brief one-liner that  describes the content within the web page. It shows up on the top left hand corner of your browser. You must include this on your website and you must not go overboard with the description. Be accurate, descriptive yet brief. Use keywords here that reflect the keywords you will use within the content of that page. Every web Page has it’s own title Meta Tag. The Title description is what shows up in the SERP (Search Engine Result Page). So make this creative, effective and attractive, but don’t just stuff it with keywords.
  • Meta Tags: Every HTML document has Meta Tags at the top; between the <HEAD> and </HEAD>. See the image sample of the Meta Tags and what their content looks like;

  • Meta Tag – Keywords: These a re series of keywords which further describe and reflect the content of your web page. Now there is a lot of discussion whether Search Engines actually take into consideration keywords from here to rank a site or page. Some gurus say this has no bearing, some disagree. Here is my take on it; years ago Search Engines did give a lot of weight to these keywords, as a matter of fact they were critical to the success of your site. These days they may not have the weight they once did, but I recommend you should still use them and place them as if they were very important. Why? because search engine algorithms get constantly tweaked so you never know. Secondly the spider algorithms differ, so what Google may not consider important could have more weight with Yahoo for instance. In any event they do not harm the SEO of your site or page.
  • Meta Tag – Description: This should a brief description on the content of your site or web page and should also include a few of the keywords in it. Here again it seems the search engines like Google do not give it as much consideration for Ranking purposes, but you should fully utilize this Meta Tag as it does come into play during a keyword or keyphrase search matching it with the description and keywords within your Meta Tag. Although you may put a big description here only about 175 characters are displayed in the SERP.
  • There are other Meta Tags too, such as Author etc, but these are for information or description purposes only and have no bearing whatsoever on the SEO of your website or web page. Observe how the title gives a brief description on what the particular web page is all about. Every web page has these Meta Tags at the top, so each and every page has it’s particular Title, Keywords and Description and other Tags you need.

So there is the start to Search Engine Optimizing your website or a web page. If you wish to view any Websites or Web Pages Meta Tags all you do is; right click on the page and select “View Page Source” or “Page Source”. This will display the code for that page or document. Look at the top and you will find all the Meta Tags and their content. This is one great way to find keywords that other sites are using (a little sneaky).
