Improve SEO; Use Keywords To Name Your Files
November 28, 2010 8 CommentsOne very important part of website planning that gets overlooked consistently by most is the use of file names for SEO (Search Engine Optimization) purposes. Our website has a bunch of files and documents that are accessed by various webpages, these files need to be given meaningful and appropriateĀ names to help improve our website’s ranking.
For instance stay away from giving them names like document1, document2 etc or home-page-image1, image2, website-image1A. Seriously, do these files names actually mean anything to anyone else but you. A Search Engine Spider crawls the web grabbing as much information as it can, including all folder and file names from all sites including yours. Search Engines even index image, video and other files as part of their search routine.
Users Google for specific information on the web and many do so for Images, Videos etc. In fact Google and others engines also give you the option of viewing image files for the term that you are searching for. Let’s say we are searching for a specific type of Boots; and key in the following words “Black Leather Cowboy Boots”. This term will bring up thousands of potential websites that meet this search criteria in SERP and it will also bring up thousands of images. How do you think Google found those images? It did so because it found image files that were named using those all or some of those Keywords.
If your site had similar images with the names like image1.jpg, MK30009.jpg, picture1.gif or home-page-img1.jpg, do you think your images would be displayed during the above Keyword search? No way. But if they were stored with intelligent meaningful names like; gents-black-leather-boots1.jpg or a combination of those words, your chances of showing up in an image search are pretty darn good. Clicking on those searched images also takes you back to your webpage, another way to get more visitors to your site and improve your ranking.
So here is the plan; name EVERYTHING on your site using meaningful and intelligent names. Use KEYWORDS to name your files. Don’t give your files just a generic or general names, attach a name that actually describes the content. Even documents and folders on your site should be given appropriate names. Use every conceivable way to Improve and Search Engine Optimize your website, trust me you will see a difference. This is part of planning your site.
