Effective Link Building Techniques

June 20, 2010 No Comments

In order to position and rank a website higher in a SERP (Search Engine Results Page); one has to prepare, design and plan their website accordingly. Several techniques and fundamentals need to be applied for a site to be Search Engine Optimized. One of these techniques is Linking.

What does Linking mean and how does a Search Engine evaluate your links?

Basically a link is a pointer (URL) from site A to site B.

So why is linking such an integral part of SEO and why do Search Engines put such an emphasis on links?

Links are the glue that binds the internet together and allows users and searchers to hop, skip and jump from site to site in order to find and discover what they are looking for. Well built links allows one to “Link” from site to site; that is what makes the internet a viable proposition and creates a vast array of website(s) network.

But not ALL links carry the same value. Links to other non related sites have the least amount of link juice and may very well give your site negative points. A site selling shoes linking to a site about apples has zero relevance, and if these two sites were to reciprocate links then they would be of little or no value. As a matter of fact it could be deemed a link “just for the sake” of linking by the search engines and have a negative impact on both sites.

Here are effective ways to build Links and increase your Ranking;

Do not Link with sites that have NO content relevance to yours. Do it with sites that are within your industry, have relevant content to your site and add value for your users.

Try to stay away from just having Reciprocal Links, have some linkouts (1 way links that point to another site) that add value to your visitors. Although you are thinking; “why would I linkout to some site that does not link back to mine?” to me this is short term thinking. I honestly believe that pointing your users to other sites that are of benefit to them will give your site value in terms of readership and even with search engines. Users and search engines value sites that are willing to share ideas and information.

Build 3 way or more links. Most website owners like the 1-1 (A links to B and B links back to A) link exchange because both parties feel they gained from the exchange. In the short term this is true and helps our egos. In the long term its value is not is not as high as one way links. A more powerful link method is as follows; A links to B which links to C which links to A. If you study this you will realize that everyone gains here, they ALL get a one way link (very powerful).

Add links as part of your content (Contextual Linking); within paragraphs or sentences of your write ups. For example: we have a new link building site that allows you to become a member and exchange links with other members. Notice how I have included the link as part of the verbiage. This is a very powerful link. Speak to your link partners and both of you have to do this.

Build “Deep” Links. These are links that Point Out or Point To Specific Web Pages rather then your home page. If you have All Links Pointing to only one of your web page such as; Home Page, then only the Home Pages’ Ranking increases. Your goal should be to increase the PageRank of each and every page of your website.

If you decide to exchange or reciprocate links with other sites at least point to each other web page that is relevant and use the contextual linking technique.
